The firm has finally put one of their most popular robots on sale: Spot the robot dog. And it is going for a whopping U.S. $74,500.
"Spot comes ready to operate, right out of the box. With its flexible API and payload interfaces, Spot can be customized for a variety of applications," reads the robot's online description. It also adds that the robot dog is for U.S. sales only.
The price includes shipping and delivery arrives in 6 to 8 weeks.
"This launch marks the first time that businesses can purchase a Boston Dynamics robot, and represents Boston Dynamics’ first online sales offering," reads the firm's press release on the matter.
The robot dog was previously available for short-term lease under Boston Dynamics’ Early Adopter Program that saw over 150 Spot robots provided to domestic and international entities. The machine was used in a variety of environments including but not limited to power generation facilities and decommissioned nuclear sites and in creative applications such as dancing and other performances.
“At Boston Dynamics, we have spent decades creating and refining robots with advanced mobility, dexterity, and intelligence because we believe agile robots can solve a broad range of real-world problems,” said Marc Raibert, chairman and founder of Boston Dynamics.
“The combination of Spot’s sophisticated software and high performance mechanical design enables the robot to augment difficult or dangerous human work. Now you can use Spot to increase human safety in environments and tasks where traditional automation hasn’t been successful.”
Now that the robot has been made publicly available it will be interesting to see how it is used over the next few years. Surely we will be hearing some great stories.
